FIND SANTA is a mobile geography learning app for grades 1-5. This concept app lets young users find Santa (who has gone missing) by visiting cities from all around the world. In each city, users will learn fun facts about that city, and earn special treats for learning. 

TARGET USER

Kids 6-12 years old, and their parents.

THE CHALLENGE

Designing an app for kids is quite different than adult users. Usually, an app for kids only targets a small age range (generally 2 years). The FIND SANTA goal is to create an interactive game that can be used by a larger age range of young users.

THE SOLUTION

Create a customizable experience based on user age or school grade to determine how many cities they can visit and how many fun facts they can learn. Older users will be challenged to visit and learn more cities and fun facts about the cities. By being able to customize the complexity level, FIND SANTA can be played by more users.

USER JOURNEY

There are two main user journeys in FIND SANTA. A new user journey is where the user can customize their profile before looking for Santa. A returning user journey is where they can continue their exploration in finding Santa. 

WIREFRAME

One of the main challenges in creating a user experience for a kids app is figuring out a way to capture their attention and keep their interest.  To keep young users engaged in the beginning of the app, I use illustrative storytelling and interactive profile creation. 

I also use reward system to motivate and engage users to continue exploring and learning. When the user visits each city, they will learn fun facts about those cities and get a treat for learning. The more cities they visit, the more treats they earn, as well as more clues to find where Santa is. 

VISUAL DESIGN SYSTEM

FIND SANTA is an app that adds to the festivities of the holiday season. But the FIND SANTA goal is to create a geography learning app that can be used globally. With this in mind, I chose Blue and Red Orange as the main color of the app, as a twist iteration of the traditional Green and Red Christmas colors. 

Illustration is the main asset that defines the look and feel of Find Santa. The illustration style that I chose for this app is simple and modern. The purpose of this approach is to provide a good interaction balance with the educational elements that the user gets when using this app.
